Proposed legislation would continue the legal status for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) program beneficiaries. DACA, created by executive action in 2012, allows legal protection for undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children – nicknamed “Dreamers” – including protection from deportation and work permits.
The bill is in response to Donald Trump’s threats to revoke executive actions, including this one. Essentially, the legislation would keep in place the legal status for those 740,000 young people who have legal status already. Senator Lindsey Graham (R.-S.C.) is sponsoring the bill.
